Ok, let’s say global warming is all Al Gore says it is. I suppose he could be correct. I suppose worldview has nothing to do with it (impossible) and that scientific grants and science itself are without bias (also impossible). My own biases may mislead me (certainly possible). So, assuming that global warming is a reality and that the industrial revolution caused it, I ponder this question:
Why would you and I be subjected to such insulting advertising news headlines as this: "Feel the Heat? You’re not Alone: Earth Hottest in 400 Years"? I know, I know I’m hopelessly out of date and no scientist. But my mind has not completely succumbed to senility or modernism (you decide which is worse). And so I read the article (novel idea) with analysis (an even more novel idea). I learned something. I learned that the temperature has risen, if the science can be trusted, an astounding 1 degree Farenheit. Yes, you read correctly: ONE DEGREE.
The headline should say: "Why can’t you feel the heat?" To which the answer would be, "Because, being homo sapien, I am not prone to panic when the temperature rises 1 degree, a fluctuation in temperature which can be brought about by burning toast in the kitchen."
I am aware of some possible rejoinders but I just had to weigh in with this observation. One degree difference, especially when spread over an entire century, is not going to make you or me feel ANYTHING. Indeed, the only thing I feel is indignation at the insult to our collective intelligence that such a headline embodies.
There you have it — I feel the heat alright. I am angry, and it is more than a one degree increase. Problem is, I’ll get over it (sometime). But alas, our headline unthink is with us to stay.
