Inane Advertising

June 23rd, 2006

Ok, let’s say global warming is all Al Gore says it is. I suppose he could be correct. I suppose worldview has nothing to do with it (impossible) and that scientific grants and science itself are without bias (also impossible). My own biases may mislead me (certainly possible). So, assuming that global warming is a reality and that the industrial revolution caused it, I ponder this question:

Why would you and I be subjected to such insulting advertising news headlines as this: "Feel the Heat? You’re not Alone: Earth Hottest in 400 Years"? I know, I know I’m hopelessly out of date and no scientist. But my mind has not completely succumbed to senility or modernism (you decide which is worse). And so I read the article (novel idea) with analysis (an even more novel idea). I learned something. I learned that the temperature has risen, if the science can be trusted, an astounding 1 degree Farenheit. Yes, you read correctly: ONE DEGREE.

The headline should say: "Why can’t you feel the heat?" To which the answer would be, "Because, being homo sapien, I am not prone to panic when the temperature rises 1 degree, a fluctuation in temperature which can be brought about by burning toast in the kitchen."

I am aware of some possible rejoinders but I just had to weigh in with this observation. One degree difference, especially when spread over an entire century, is not going to make you or me feel ANYTHING. Indeed, the only thing I feel is indignation at the insult to our collective intelligence that such a headline embodies.

There you have it — I feel the heat alright. I am angry, and it is more than a one degree increase. Problem is, I’ll get over it (sometime). But alas, our headline unthink is with us to stay.

This Matter of Gay Marriage

June 8th, 2006

The word inane is quite close to insane and, being an amateur etymologist, I will suggest, wholly without research, that the words are related. Be that as it may, much of newsprint (blogprint!?) is inane today and not a little of it also qualifies as insane. Such was the category of one of myriad inanities regarding the matter of gay marriage.

The particular comment I have in mind goes something like this: "Opponents declared civilization would end if gay marriage were legalized. Massachussetts did so. The commonwealth is still standing."

Never mind that this is the age of process, where societal change is supposed to take a very LONG time. Never mind the worse insanity suggested by someone who thought evolution was bringing about homosexuality in order to curb population growth. THAT would be evolution on hyperactive steroids.

Never mind that and alot of other in[s]anities in the remark. The problem with it is that it dismisses marriage as having little import in society. Genital behavior matters little. Sexuality only matters for the obvious pleasure it allows. All is utilitarian, all is material.

But this is simply not possible. If marriage is of such negative merit as to be valued only at the whims of persons capable of sexual behavior, why all the fuss? If it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter. Forget it.

Problem is, it does matter, and we know it does. Just don’t make me carry on the critical nature of it — I will deface the image at will and drag beauty in the dust. I will pretend sexuality is purely individual (another insanity) — never mind that if that were so I would never be here in order to say so.

The most important things in life must be received and adhered to. There is no easy proving the insanity of homosexual behaviour. It will simply exact its awful tax at the expense of society itself — but that requires time. Social experimenting? If it doesn’t pass the test of the home, it doesn’t pass. If it doesn’t pass the test of the family farm, of hard work and an honest living, it cannot work out. Homosexual marriage is an attempt to turn society’s most fundamental structure upsidedown.

To require that society collapse the moment we make a fatal error is to wish something on ourselves God himself is too merciful to inflict. To imagine we cannot see the potential problems in legitimizing something as contra nature as male-male sex is to dehumanize ourselves in the worst degree. It is not rational; it is not sane; and it produces more inanity than our minds can bear.
