Busy

May 24th, 2006

One wonders at the meaning of life if one wonders at all. And the time when it can seem most meaningless is when there is no time to reflect — only time to do and scarcely enough time to do all that one is supposed to be doing.

Such is the case these days in these parts. I am remembering the words of Dallas Willard, something like this: "So many fill their lives with so much that the meaning and value is forgotten. And then, when a person realizes from time to time how empty life is, he or she tends to get all the more stuff and activity in order to stifle the sense of emptiness."

Now, I am sure this is what Jesus saves us from. We do not have to live empty lives. Jesus is the answer to which all of life is the question. And I am also sure he does not save us from activity, nor from stuff like cars and houses, etc. But what of the busyness? How do we keep our head on, our perspective clear, our priorities functioning?

I’m tempted to end the post right here because I do not have time to finish it. But…here are some thoughts on the fly.

1. You and I must have a quality prayer time every day. I remember the story of Billy Graham who, while in private prayer, received a call from the President of the United States. Per Graham’s instructions, the secretary told the President that the Rev. was unavailable. Later, the evangelist explained it this way: "Until I talk to God I have no reasonable hope that I will know what to say to anyone else." Praying orients us, keeps us in tune with our Maker. A pretty good idea if we hope to live in the world He has made.

And for now I am going to stop typing and go pray.
